Huawei's Latest Smartphone No Revolutionary Hardware

The newest top smartphone from Huawei doesn't have any revolutionary hardware

When Huawei unveiled the Mate 60 smartphone in the middle of 2023, it caught people's attention all across the world when dismantling artists discovered that it had a system-on-chip made with a 7nm technology by Chinese chipmaker Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC).

It was believed that SMIC couldn't construct anything of that nature. Therefore, even if the Mate 60 was essentially the same as every other smartphone on the market today, its very existence raised doubts about the success of US-led attempts to keep cutting-edge semiconductor technology out of the Middle Kingdom.

As a result, there was a lot of conjecture over what Huawei might release next. This week, the Pura 70 provided the world with the answer.

According to Chinese media, early adopters of the smartphone have revealed specifications of its internal components. The SoC is identified as Kirin 9010, and it has four effective cores operating at 1.55GHz, six performance cores at 2.18GHz, and two high-performance cores whirling away at 2.30GHz. Every core is Arm v8. It appears to be a 7nm chip, according to a third-party spec sheet, which means Chinese chipmakers haven't made any more significant advancements.

According to early testing, it performs better than the Kirin 9000 in the Mate 60, but independent evaluations are still pending. The present accessible crowdsourced reviews are not always reliable.

It is certain that the Pura 70 sports a 6.6-inch OLED display with a refresh rate of 120Hz and a resolution of 2,760 x 1,256. Customers can select from 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB of storage, and it comes with 12GB RAM.

The three rear-facing cameras on the entry-level versions have individual megapixel counts of 50, 12, and 13.

The Pura line of smartphones is based on Huawei's P-Series phones, which were available at mid-range to low-end premium prices. However, the Pura line is currently targeted at photography aficionados. There are four versions of the smartphone, and the prices of each correspond to the four Apple iPhone 15 editions.

The premium "Ultra" model has a screen that measures 6.8 inches and has 2,844 x 1,260 pixels. It also has two rear cameras, one with 50 megapixels and one with 40. The 50MP camera has a retractable lens to improve zooming capabilities.

Crucially, Huawei's non-Android operating system, HarmonyOS 4.2, is installed on all Pura 70 variants.

China is fully committed to HarmonyOS as it looks for domestic alternatives to technology produced in the West. Chinese government agencies and media have been highlighting the increasing number of native HarmonyOS apps in recent weeks, claiming that because of developers' passion for the platform, local consumers now have a more patriotic option.

Huawei's smartphone market share increased by 36.2% with the launch of the Mate 60, according to research firm IDC. This suggests that the alternative is welcome.
