Best Stuffing for Crock Pot or Oven

Easy-to-follow crock pot stuffing recipe including tender, creamy bread, crunchy, toasted edges, and an unidentified ingredient.

Discovered using a crock cooker to make stuffing To satisfy my stuffing obsession, I have started surreptitiously meal-prepping stuffing at the start of each week.

Is stuffing exclusively associated with Thanksgiving? Not me!

Making stuffing isn't particularly difficult. It's among the simplest side dishes possibly the easiest.

The most important decision you'll have to make is whether to use store-bought bread cubes or slice up a loaf of bread.

I carry out both. Store-bought bread cubes come in handy when I'm in a rush, but for a more special stuffing like Thanksgiving, I'll grab a rustic loaf, break it apart, and dry out the cubes by hand.

How to prepare cubes of bread for filling

Choose to make a loaf of bread. There are countless varieties of bread available! Typically, I use French, sourdough, or rustic white bread.

Cut the bread into cubes. Slice the bread into 1/2 to 3/4-inch thick pieces using a bread knife. Then, lay the slices flat and cut them into 1/2 to 3/4-inch strips. Cube the strips by cutting them.

Toast the squares of bread. Arrange the bread cubes in a single layer on a baking tray, and bake, tossing once or twice, in a low oven until they are crisp and dry. Allow to cool fully. Whoa! homemade cubes of bread.

Bonus: Tear your bread if you want your stuffing to look more artisanal, rustic, and hipster. A little more texture and craggily cracks give the unevenly ripped pieces a more handcrafted appearance and toast more effectively!

You're almost done once you have your bread cubes. This stuffing is packed (hee hee) with traditional tastes like celery, garlic, sage, and thyme. To make this stuffing pop, I also included some umami-enhancing ingredients like mixed mushrooms, shallots, and a little soy sauce.

This stuffing in the crock pot is delicious! It offers the ideal balance of textures—soft and squishy, as well as toasted and crunchy. The tastiest part is where the stuffing is crispy and nicely caramelized—right up against the crock pot's side.

How to prepare stuffing

Toast the bread. Toasted bread has a crisp exterior and a little moist interior thanks to the oven. It should have a crouton-like texture.

Add the aromatics and sauté. This step requires you to use a skillet, but it's well worth it because searing the shallots and mushrooms extracts a ton of flavor.

Stir the filling. Obtain a large bowl to ensure that everything is evenly mixed. Try to soak all of the bread equally.

Use a crock pot to cook it. After liberally buttering the crock pot insert, fill it with everything, cover it, and simmer on low for three to four hours. The insides will be creamy and custardy, while the sides will receive a lovely crispness.
