Father Amorth is going to be making a comeback after The Pope's Exorcist, making it unfortunate for demons and excellent for fans of ludicrous yet hilarious horror schlock. A few weeks have passed since the theatrical release of Julius Avery's terrifying possession film, which stars Russell Crowe as Father Amorth. The first movie's plot was largely based on the exploits of Father Amorth, a real-life character, depending on how you feel about the whole "demons and exorcisms" thing. Sony Pictures and Screen Gems seem to have enjoyed it. Enough to give the impression that more Amorth are on their way.
Early stages of the sequel's development have reportedly started, and Russell Crowe is anticipated to reprise his major role. And if you disagree with it, speak to his superior, the Pope. (Or even Tim Rothman, CEO of Sony Pictures, we guess?) Crowe's scenery-chewing performance as a larger-than-life demon-slayer is evident in the movie's last third, which completely embraces an elevated tone (read: it becomes crazy like Michael Keaton's Batman).
In its last minutes, The Pope's Exorcist sets itself up for potential future entries, with numerous additional Father Amorth stories to choose from, similar to The Conjuring movies, which purportly draw on the Warrens' case files. Given that The Pope's Exorcist already generated over $52 million on a $18 million budget, a franchise may be in the works.
Nothing else is official just yet, including if Avery will return, who else will star (Daniel Zovatto should most likely return as well), or what Father Amorth's next case will be given how early in production it is. We're in as long as he has his nimble little Vespa and more one-liners up his broad exorcist sleeves.
