It was exciting to see so many Spider-people in one frame in Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, including Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, Peter B. Parker, Spider-Man Noir, Spider-Ham, and Peni Parker.
In 2023, the follow-up, Across The Spider-Verse, completely destroys that. Mild spoilers ahead: Miles Morales finally finds himself in Nueva York, where super-serious Spider-Man Miguel O'Hara has gathered a sizable team of Spider-people in his headquarters, Spider Society. When the movie is released on home video, this scene begs to be stopped since so many specific Spider-friends are pushed onto the screen in every available space.
A Spider Society member with an additional scene that would have answered all of the questions didn't make it to the screen. Joaquim Dos Santos, Thompson's co-director (together with Kemp Powers), chuckles, "One of the Toy-Biz Spider-Man toys was going to show up and he was going to have a kid's hand that would go off-screen and hold him."
But in the end, our main Spider-Man needs to feel amazed by the sequence. "We wanted to make sure Spider Society could have jokes and things like Bag-Man, but when Miles showed up you wanted to be in awe of this place," says Dos Santos. "Emotionally, it had to feel cool." How else could it not be with Spider-Punk in the mix?
There are around 150 named Spider-people with distinct designs, including several bizarre variations like the web-spreading Spider-Cat and the Spider-fied T. rex. From the start, Thompson explains, "I was like, Can we have Peter Parkedcar?" "Can he be made to resemble a Hanna Barbera cartoon?" The answer, obviously, turned out to be "Yes."
